Morning Run, Joanna Klain, mixed mediaThe Patricia M. Nugent Gallery is pleased to announce “Playing with Paper,” a mixed media and collage exhibition of the works of Joanna Klain, a Massachusetts artist who lived and worked for many years in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.  Rosemont’s Gallery joins the many private galleries, colleges, universities and museums, from the Philadelphia region to the NYC., in exhibiting the work of Klain.

According to the artist, “I make images on and with paper driven by a preoccupation with the mysterious, the glimpsed and the imagined."

Klain has long established herself as a leader in etching. However, she says, “Several years ago I woke up one morning and decided not to do any more etching. This choice triggered a period of experimentation. Finding ways to finish the images on my already etched plates led to a larger exploration of the use of paper as both the matrix and the subject of an image. Cutting shapes and lines out of variously marked and or painted papers has allowed me To draw directly with scissors or a sharp blade.“

Many of the collage and mixed media works in this exhibit are embedded with parts of images from Klain’s etching “proofs”. They contain bits of prints that led up to a final editioned work. Parts gleaned from these other images take on new meanings in the context of these collaged compositional spaces, according to the artist. Most recently the collage “AFTER RAIN” was the subject of a feature article published in the May issue of Berkshire Magazine.

Klain has a BFA in Fine Art from Ohio University. Her work is in many private and public collections in Australia, Canada, Great Britain, Mexico, The Dominican Republic, and the USA, including the Cleveland Art Institute, McNeil Pharmaceuticals, Ohio University, and Thomas Jefferson University. Her work has received accolades for three decades.
