What is service-learning?
"Service-learning is a form of experiential learning in which students engage in activities that address human and community needs together with structured opportunities intentionally designed to promote student learning and development. Reflection and reciprocity are key concepts of service-learning." (Jacoby, 1996).
Reflection
Reflection is central to the academic goals of higher education and an essential element of service-learning. Eyler and Giles (1999) sum up effective reflection in service-learning with their five’Cs’: Connection, Continuity, Context, Challenge, and Coaching.
Reciprocity
The principle of reciprocity suggests that all of the participants in service-learning should be viewed as colleagues, not as servers or clients. All participants serve and learn from each other
