BACKGROUND
Joshua Engel is a highly respected and experienced attorney. In 2007, his work as a prosecutor was recognized by a Meritorious Service Award from the Ohio Prosecuting Attorneys Association. He has served as a member of the Ohio Supreme Court’s Advisory Committee on Domestic Violence and as an ex officio member of the Ohio Supreme Court’s Rule Commission.

Mr. Engel recently served as Chief Legal Counsel for the Ohio Department of Public Safety. In that position, he provided legal advice to the Department to aid in the development of a coordinated, comprehensive state strategy to address public safety and homeland security issues. While overseeing attorneys and support staff, he coordinated all civil litigation for the Department, including cases involving complex constitutional issues and cases where the Department faced millions of dollars in exposure.

Prior to joining the Department of Public Safety, Mr. Engel was one of the most respected and successful prosecutors in Ohio. As an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney in Warren County, Ohio, he handled some of the office’s most challenging and high profile cases, including death penalty cases and appeals. He was also requested by the state and national district attorneys associations to write amicus curiae briefs on behalf of the organizations Mr. Engel began his career as a prosecutor by serving in Middlesex County, Massachusetts. He started his legal career at Choate, Hall & Stewart, a large Boston law firm known for more than a century as the home of some the nation’s most accomplished litigators. 

Mr. Engel is a frequent speaker at law enforcement and legal conferences, and has published a number of scholarly issues on constitutional and technology issues. Mr. Engel has served as a Fellow with the Ohio State Bar Foundation and has been honored as a recipient of a Harry S. Truman Scholarship for Public Service. Mr. Engel is admitted to practice in the United States Supreme Court, as well as state and Federal courts in Ohio and Massachusetts.
