Rosemont Abroad: Morogoro, Tanzania

In June 2012, four Rosemont students and one staff member spent two weeks teaching English to high school students in Morogoro, Tanzania. The trip, organized by the African Sisters Education Collaborative, also included students and staff from other Philadelphia area schools. In addition to teaching, the group also had the opportunity to get to know community members where they stayed, explore the beautiful countryside, and immerse themselves in Tanzanian culture.

Some of the Rosemont students shared their thoughts on the trip upon returning home:

“This trip was definitely an eye-opening experience as are all trips abroad, but personally, this trip was life-changing. I do not know if I am ever going back to Africa, but I am allowing what I learned there to be replicated here. To be relational rather than task orientated. To work with people instead of through people. To share what has been given. ” - Daniel Gershman '13

“This experience has been incredible. I have learned so much about myself and have used this experience to make a decision about what I will be doing in the fall. All of my service experiences were not about padding my resume but... the dawning realization of the greater understanding our humanity, our fragility and a greater appreciation of the great lives that so many of us lead and deem to be ‘normal’ – when it pretty much is extraordinary in its own respect relative to many other individuals around the world.” - Waynetta Faust '12

“I saw what life was like at a completely different socioeconomic, cultural, and racial standpoint. I also lived with less amenities then I am surely used to... I believe to serve a group of people it is important to walk with them as them. To live life the way they live their lives for the time being that you are amongst them. By doing so you inherit a greater example of how life is for someone different than you. By doing so you learn that living different is not wrong, it is simply different.” - Klarisse Torriente '14
