New Ethical Institute Established

Rosemont College is pleased to announce an exciting new undertaking tied to its historic mission. The Institute for Ethical Leadership and Social Responsibility was launched this month, thanks to a generous lead gift from Halloran Philanthropies. Under the guidance of its director, Dr. Alan Preti, the Institute will seek to understand and promote the essential connection between ethical leadership and social responsibility.

“I am particularly thrilled about this project because it is so closely related to the mission of Rosemont College,” said President Sharon Latchaw Hirsh, Ph.D. ’70. “Everything we do here is tied to what we value and what makes us feel purposeful. The Institute for Ethical Leadership and Social Responsibility will allow us to enhance and expand that both within the Rosemont community and beyond it.”

Goals for the Institute will center on research and scholarship, teaching and practice, and leadership. Specific projects will include establishing a comprehensive research library, developing an online journal, creating service and experiential learning opportunities, and building partnerships with businesses and government agencies.

The Institute will also host an annual conference for regional and national leaders in ethical leadership and social responsibility. Director Preti has already started preparing for the inaugural conference, set to take place in spring 2012.

The groundwork for the Institute was laid during Rosemont’s last strategic planning process in 2007. Its aim to improve local and global communities through socially responsible leadership will work in harmony with the college’s overall mission. Rooted in the core principles of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus, the Rosemont mission emphasizes reverence for the dignity of each person, diversity in human experience, and promoting justice with compassion.

These principles resonated with Halloran Philanthropies, which works to raise levels of well-being around the globe in socially responsible ways. It was Halloran Philanthropies’ synergy with Rosemont’s values and commitment to ethics led to the initial gift needed for the launch.

As the Institute grows and develops, it is hoped that it will not only strengthen a shared spirit and purpose among members of the Rosemont community, but also extend the college’s long held mission to the larger world.
