Rosemont College Students Takeoff to Ghana, West Africa

On Friday, May 16 Rosemont College students will leave campus and head for Ghana, West Africa to embark on a great adventure. These Rosemont students have spent their last semester studying about the life of Cornelia Connelly, the founder of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus (SHCJ), and the Society’s move into West Africa.

Cornelia Connelly is the founder of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus, a Roman Catholic religious institute. She was born in Philadelphia in 1809, began her conversion to Roman Catholicism in the southern US, and in 1846 founded the first of many Holy Child schools, in England.

The students will board a bus on the Rosemont College campus, head for JFK airport and then onto Accra, Ghana. Once in Ghana the students will take the 2.5 hour drive to the town of Cape Coast where they will be living with the African SHCJ for almost three weeks. Sisters Carol Ann Knight and Anita Quigley, both American SHCJs, will accompany the students.

“Our mission in Cape Coast is to be of service to the Daughters of Mary and Joseph at their small facility for children, many of whom are developmentally delayed and/or abandoned by their families. Helping with homework, doing laundry (by hand), gardening, food prep, cleaning house – whatever happens to be needed, will be our contribution for that particular day,” said Sister Carol Ann Knight.

At the SHCJ convent the students will participate in the life of the community as fully as possible–fetching water, shopping in the local open market, kitchen duty, and community prayer will all be on the daily agenda.

Each evening there will be a session to help students process the day’s experiences – what did they see that made them feel happy and what concerned them – and why.

Sister Anita Quigley added, “During our two weekends in Ghana we hope to explore the castles in Cape Coast and Elmina which were the site of the departure for many of the slaves to the New World. We’ll walk above the tree tops on the canopy walk in Kakum National Park, visit an SHCJ teacher training college in Takoradi, and shop in their circular market among other daytrips.”

Rosemont College is a private, coeducational Catholic institution founded in 1921 by the Society of the Holy Child Jesus. Rosemont offers a comprehensive education through small group and experiential learning experiences while providing campus-wide academic, spiritual, and professional support. We respect and embrace diversity and individuality and promote student’s lifelong success.
