Wendell and Anita Holland of Bryn Mawr to Be Honored

Wendell and Anita Holland are the recipients of the 2013 Cresset Award. The Cresset Award is given by Rosemont College to outstanding individuals who have demonstrated a strong commitment to promoting values and to supporting education for all people. Wendell Holland, Partner at Saul Ewing LLP, and Anita Holland, his wife, will be honored at the 23rd Cresset Award Dinner on May 8, at the Merion Cricket Club, in Haverford, PA. This year’s dinner will be chaired by Nicholas DeBenedictis, Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and President, Aqua America, and his wife, Eileen DeBenedictis, of Ardmore, PA.

“Anita and I are proud of our long association with Rosemont College. We love living around the corner from the College and being a part of all that it offers to the community and its students. We could not be more pleased and honored to be the 2013 recipients of the Rosemont College Cresset Award,” said Wendell Holland.

Wendell, a graduate of Lower Merion High School, is very involved in the Main Line community. He serves currently on the Boards of the Bryn Mawr Trust Bank, Main Line Health Systems, and Aqua America. He served as well on the Boards of the Ardmore Avenue Community Center, the Agnes Irwin School and Rosemont College.

Recognized repeatedly as one of Philadelphia's Most Influential African Americans and by the Main Line Martin Luther King Association, Wendell is currently a Partner at Saul Ewing specializing in national and statewide utility regulation, particularly involving the electric, natural gas, water, telecommunications and transportation industries .

Wendell’s extensive knowledge covers national and statewide utility regulation, particularly involving the electric, natural gas, water, telecommunications and transportation industries.

After practicing law and serving as a corporate executive, Wendell was appointed as Commissioner of the PaPUC and served from 1990 to 1993. He then served as Chairman from 2004 to June 2008 where he was responsible for deciding utility mergers and acquisitions; for the implementation of legislation that triggered comprehensive and substantial changes to renewable energy; telecommunication reform and consumer services legislation. Wendell was at the helm when the PaPUC was named Regulatory Agency of the Year by the U.S. Energy Association.

Between his terms at PaPUC, Wendell was Of Counsel at Obermayer Rebman from 1999 to 2003; Vice President of American Water Works Company from 1996 to 1999 and a Partner at LeBoeuf Lamb Greene and McRae from 1993 to 1995.

In 2007, Wendell became the recipient of the Whitney M. Young, Jr. Service Award for the Cradle of Liberty Council of the Boy Scouts of America. The purpose of the Whitney M. Young Jr. Service Award is to recognize outstanding services by an adult individual or an organization for demonstrated involvement in the development and implementation of scouting opportunities for youth from rural or low-income urban backgrounds. Wendell grew up in Ardmore and graduated from Lower Merion High School which deeply influenced his perspective on cross-cultural relations and where he has been recognized as a Distinguished Alumnus. Together, Mr. and Ms. Holland are very involved in the Main Line Community.

“Anita and Wendell are one of the area’s most civically minded couples and genuinely care about the community in which they live,” said Rosemont President Sharon Latchaw Hirsh, Ph.D. ’70. “They have contributed a great deal of time and energy to many worthy organizations in Philadelphia and the Main line. We are pleased to honor Anita and Wendell Holland with this year’s Cresset Award.”

Wendell and Anita reside in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, and are the proud parents of three grown children, Lauren of Washington, DC, Wendell II of Ardmore, Pennsylvania, and Gillian, of New York, New York.

This year’s dinner will be chaired by Nicholas DeBenedictis, Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and President, Aqua America, and his wife, Eileen DeBenedictis.
