In Memoriam: Sister Mary George O'Reilly, SHCJ '38

Posted: March 10, 2014

Sister Mary George O'Reilly, SHCJ '38 has died at age 95. She passed away peacefully the morning of March 10, 2014.

An alumna of the class of 1938, Sister Mary George was an integral part of the Rosemont College community for more than 70 years as a student, faculty member, dean, and president from 1962-1971. She served as chair of Rosemont's first capital campaign from 1982 to 1992, and then as executive assistant to President Healy and President Amore from 1996 until her official retirement from the college in 2003. She continued to be a visible presence at campus events for the rest of her life, enjoying these opportunities to reconnect with alumni and meet current students.

All alumni and friends are invited to gather with the Rosemont community and remember Sister Mary George in a special way on what would have been her 96th birthday. A memorial Mass will be held in Immaculate Conception Chapel on Saturday, May 3rd at 1:00 p.m. with a reception immediately following. If you plan to attend, please email by Friday, April 25th so that we may select the proper reception location on campus.

A public wake will be held Friday, March 14th from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at New Sharon (1341 Montgomery Avenue, Bryn Mawr, PA 19010). A viewing and Mass of the Resurrection for SHCJ members and family will take place Saturday, March 15th at New Sharon Chapel. The viewing will be at 10:00 a.m. and the Mass will be at 11:00 a.m.

Due to the small size of the Chapel at New Sharon and the fact that Sister Mary George's SHCJ community wants to celebrate her funeral in its normal custom, Rosemont College alumnae are encouraged to attend the memorial Mass on May 3rd rather than the March 15th funeral Mass. Thank you for honoring this request from the Society.

The Office of Alumni Relations will be collecting remembrances of Sister Mary George for the Rosemont Archives. If you would like to submit a remembrance, please email or mail to:

The Rosemont College community is infinitely grateful to Sister Mary George for her decades of service and the lasting impact she had on the lives of generations of students. She embodied the spirit of Cornelia Connelly in her respect for each person and their unique gifts. So many of us were fortunate to be the recipients of her love, her honest words, and her warm smile.
