Sister Mary George O'Reilly Turns 90!

Rosemont Alumni Unite to Celebrate the Birthday of a Very Special Person!

On Sunday, September 14th a very special celebration was held for Sister Mary George O’Reilly’s 90th Birthday. The festivities began with a Mass of Thanksgiving in Rosemont’s Chapel, followed by a Tea in Main Building.

Reverend Richard O’Leary, OSA presided over the Mass and several alumni participated in the service. The Tea was a mini reunion of sorts: The 90 degree heat and humidity that day did not prevent 150 alumni from coming out to give Sister their birthday wishes and finest regards. After the Mass, President Hirsh presented Sister Mary George with a memory book compiled of photos and memorabilia submitted by many alumni.

Throughout the summer, over 445 alumni and members of the Rosemont Community gave donations to Rosemont in honor of Sister Mary George’s birthday. To date, these gifts have raised almost $190,000 and will benefit areas of greatest need for the College – an incredible testament to a Rosemont woman who has given so much of herself to Rosemont, and who has touched the lives and hearts of many!

Author of Reading Lolita in Tehran:
  A Memoir in Books

  2008 Presidential Lecture
  March 12, 2008

Earning high acclaim and an enthusiastic readership, Reading Lolita in Tehran spent 117 weeks on the "The New York Times" bestseller list and has been translated in 32 languages. Described as compassionate and a harrowing portrait of the Islamic revolution in Iran, Reading Lolita in Tehran recounts the personal and academic exchanges among seven young women enrolled in a private literature class Dr. Nafisi held in her home after the Iranian government barred her from teaching at the University of Tehran.
