A Retrospective: From Figure to Place
Posted September 16, 2011
Lawrence Gallery is pleased to announce a new exhibit featuring the paintings of local artist Francine Shore. “A Retrospective: From Figure to Place” will be on display September 29 to October 27, 2011. An opening reception will take place October 6 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., with an artist’s talk at 4:30 p.m.
Shore said she chose works for her retrospective exhibition she felt best represented her journey as an artist. “The title of my show refers to my process. ‘Figure to Place’ happened when I started painting out everything that wasn’t essential, that seemed like an overstatement.” She continued, “I begin with an idea, not a plan. This allows me to explore the possibilities until something seems right.”
Of her newest work, Shore states, “Imagery has become reductive, released from gravity, and set free from a horizon line. The idea of making paintings that concentrate energy into stillness intrigues me.”
The recipient of several awards for her work, Shore’s honors include a Ford Foundation grant, the Benton Spruance Award for printmaking, and the TV Guide Award for painting. Her exhibitions have been featured at Aaron Gallery in Washington, D.C. and 3rd Street Gallery in Philadelphia, among others.
She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Philadelphia College of Art, now the University of the Arts. She also did graduate work at LaSalle University and University of Mexico, and has worked as instructor for Main Line Art Center in Haverford since 1986.
Lawrence Gallery is located in Lawrence Hall on Rosemont College’s campus at 1400 Montgomery Avenue in Rosemont, PA. The gallery’s hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
