Lawrence Gallery: Nature's Skirt
Posted August 23, 2012
Lawrence Gallery is pleased to announce a new exhibit featuring the paintings and drawings of Anne Milner. “Nature’s Skirt” will be on display September 6 to 28, 2012. An opening reception will take place September 6 from 4:00 to 6:30 p.m., with an artist’s talk at 4:30 p.m.
Milner describes her work as a reflection of her passion for nature. “It is an exploration of the beauty and spirit present in the natural world around me,” she said. “I love trees, water, vegetation; and the forms of animals, birds, and the human body. Each of my paintings is a search for an underlying essence, a mystery that is present in these forms.”
Drawing inspiration first from nature, and then her imagination, Milner says she builds her paintings slowly. Sometimes, she paints watercolors on the floor. “This allows me to be connected to the images in a more direct way,” she explained. “I use my whole body, feeling as if I am entering into the painting.”
Her work has also been strongly influenced by her search for her birthparents. “My adoption has always been a powerful force underlying my creative process,” said Milner. “My paintings reflect a journey and a personal search – a testament to the power of the biological family.”
Milner earned a bachelor of arts, a bachelor of fine arts, and a master of fine arts degree in painting from the University of Pennsylvania. In 2000, she was awarded a residency at the Vermont Studio Center. She has taught at the University of New Hampshire, Montgomery County Community College, Main Line Art Center, and Moore College of Art and Design, among others.
