Philosophy and Program Options

The graduate psychology faculty warmly welcomes your interest in our program. We believe that counselors-in-training require knowledge, skills, and self-awareness in order to become successful helping professionals. Therefore our program takes a holistic approach by emphasizing personal growth, and training graduate students to become competent and ethical professionals in the practice of counseling psychology.

As a student, you will gain insight into human development, group and individual differences, and patterns of behavior. You will learn to evaluate and select approaches to assessment and counseling, make appropriate referrals, and counsel individuals, families and groups. Course sequencing involves building a solid knowledge base of research, theory and practice prior to skill training. Counseling strategies and techniques are learned through experiential exercises in the classroom and laboratory. This prepares students to apply acquired interviewing, assessment, and counseling skills in supervised practicum.

You'll discover that we offer a number of program options:

-You may choose to earn your Master's Degree in Counseling Psychology and specialize in Professional Counseling. This prepares students to seek Pennsylvania State Professional Counselor Licensure.

-You may choose to earn your Master's Degree in Counseling Psychology and specialize in Addictions Counseling. This prepares students to seek certification as a Certified Addictions Counselor Diplomate in Pennsylvania.

-You may choose to earn your Master's Degree in Counseling Psychology and specialize in either Elementary or Secondary School Counseling. This enables students to obtain Pennsylvania State Department of Education Specialist I Certification.

-If you have already obtained your Master's Degree in a closely related area, you may choose to pursue Pennsylvania State Department of Education Specialist I Certification in Elementary or Secondary Counseling as a separate credential.

-If you have already obtained your Master's Degree in a closely related area, you may choose to earn a Certificate in Addictions Counseling. This prepares students to seek certification as a Certified Addictions Counselor Diplomate in Pennsylvania.

-Finally, you may choose to earn graduate credits for professional development, Act 48 credits, or to maintain and update your credentials.

We are sensitive to the needs of the adult learner. We understand that you are a busy adult with many other commitments in your life, so we keep our course scheduling as flexible as possible. We meet in the evenings throughout the calendar year. Our classes are small and our approach is personal and supportive. You will work closely with an adviser to determine course selection and sequencing.

Program graduates have been highly successful in obtaining professional employment as direct service providers and as program administrators in community mental health centers, hospitals, social service agencies, day-treatment centers, geriatric facilities, prisons, drug and alcohol facilities, and the public and private schools. Some graduates choose to continue their studies in a doctoral program.
