MGT 6604 Information Systems
The historical development of Information Systems and Information Technology (IS/IT) in the workplace is examined, as is the management of such systems. Major themes explored include corporate strategy and planning, innovation, IT decision-making in the organization, and the cost of IS/IT. In addition, systems within a student's workplace are examined. Rest assured, this is NOT a computer-programming course! [Required course - MSM program; elective course - MBA program]
MGT 6614 Leadership for the Future
Learners explore the future of organizations, the changing role of leaders, and how to foresee, manage, and create the future. Systems thinking, trend identification and analysis, scenario building, and creating a learning organization will be examined. Scenarios for the next millennium are developed to expand the learner's ability to scan the horizon, think strategically beyond the known, predict the impact of choices, and plan for future success. MGT 6620 Decision-Making Methods
The learner develops basic competence and judgmental skills in using quantitative models and statistics for planning and decision-making. Emphasis is placed on recognizing situations where models and statistics can be used advantageously, when to work effectively with them, and how to make good use of them once they have been developed. Topics include probability, decision making under conditions of uncertainty, decision and risk analysis, forecasting, linear programming, modeling applications in marketing, manufacturing, finance and scheduling, and project management methods. MGT 6625 Leadership & Management Processes
Theoretical framework and practical concepts of management and leadership are examined in this course. Particular attention is given to incorporating both historical and contemporary works that provide a foundation for today's practices of management and leadership. Learners are guided toward the development of a personal philosophy and application of management and leadership styles, practices, and future directions. [Required course - MSM and MBA programs]
MGT 6627 Cases in Leadership
Historical and contemporary leadership roles/personalities, situations and styles are explored. While providing theoretical and practical frameworks for students, the course instructs individuals how to create personal leadership profiles. Both international and domestic organizations and their dilemmas also are addressed. By dissecting, discussing and extrapolating at least two case studies along with various other forms of business intelligence during the session, students learn to prepare themselves to answer the question: What would I do, or have done, if I were in the same situation? MGT 6631 Managerial Accounting
This course studies accounting functions, principles, and concepts underlying financial reporting. Primary emphasis is placed on the use of financial reports to evaluate corporate performance and the use of accounting information for internal planning and control, cash flow, and financial analysis. MGT 6642 Cases in Human Resources
This course is a case-based study of pertinent issues in human resources management and understanding. Topics include policy development, implementation, employee/supervisor goal setting and interaction, performance evaluation, benefits interpretation, hiring and dismissal practices. MGT 6645 Ethical & Legal Bases of Management
The situational dilemmas and relationships with customers, employees, competitors, unions, government, and society are examined from an ethical point of view. The course analyzes the essential aspects of law that pertain to business including material from the law of contracts, sales, agency, business organizations, property, negotiable instruments, and security transactions. The effects of government regulations on labor and business also are discussed. Learners explore the basics of contractual negotiation, examine ethical decisions encountered in organizational life and develop an understanding of frameworks of moral reasoning. MGT 6648 Return on Investment for Training & Development
This course provides a broad perspective to the specific challenge of accountability for dollars spent on training and development of employees. Students can expect to be engaged in readings and discussion on topics such as, a) return on investment, b) training budget allocations, c) measurements and accountability, d) loss of productivity during training, e) goal setting, and f) assessment and analysis. MGT 6651 Marketing Theory and Data Analysis
This course explores the basic concepts and fundamentals of marketing and data analysis and applies these concepts toward improving the prospects of companies faced with opportunities and challenges of doing business. Focus is on implementation of strategies through pricing, distribution channels, promotion, and new product decisions. Qualitative research techniques are addressed. The case analysis approach is used to develop an appreciation for the types of problems that exist and to illustrate how concepts and tools presented can be applied in marketing decision-making. MGT 6653 Economics in the Workplace
This course provides a broad perspective on the issues of the global marketplace of the 21st century. At a macro level, this course challenges learners to assess and analyze their own organizations and the dynamics within their workplace. Students can expect to be engaged in readings and discussions on topics such as, a) Market and Planned Economies, b) Globalization, c) Resource Allocation, d) Distribution of Wealth, e) Divisions of Labor, f) Minimum Wages, and g) Workplace Benefits. MGT 6654 Managing Beyond Chaos
The bottom line for business is to retain competitive advantage, yet how does management achieve this with its workforce? In this discussion-driven course learners trace recent (mid-80s to today) and evolving approaches to managing. Topics include barriers to innovation, creation of flexible and adaptive organizations, relationships among motivation, creativity and innovation, and specific management strategies used by CEOs. MGT 6666 Financial Principles and Policies
This course examines the theoretical framework and practical concepts of financial principles and policies. Particular attention will be given to the understanding of financial statement analysis from a business decision-making perspective. Learning components integrate standard accounting and financial analysis with emphasis on the business activities of day-to-day operations, investing, and financing. MGT 6671 Communication in the Workplace
This course examines communications media and provides students the opportunity to enhance their communications skills. Particular attention is given to communicating difficult and complicated messages to an educationally, and culturally diverse audience. [Elective course - MSM or MBA program]
MGT 6689 Strategic Management and Technology
In this course strategic management concepts are applied to various organizational types and problem-solving situations. Learners examine the evolution of strategy concepts in the context of industrial through current global business environments and use methods and tools to analyze business strategy and strategic management concepts. New management approaches and issues, such as the impacts of technology and globalization on the fast changing, knowledge-driven business landscape, also are explored. MGT 6701 Business, Government, and Society
From this course students gain an understanding of the effects of the nonmarket environment on managerial strategy and decision-making in business. Students recognize nonmarket environments characterized by the political, social and legal context in which a business is rooted, and examine the relationship between effective management and social responsibility. While the course is viewed from the decision-making perspective of business managers, not of government or the public, it is equally relevant to students whose interests are more closely aligned to the public sector and nonprofit management. MGT 6709 Globalization and Cultural Negotiation
The interdependent and interactive nature of the ever-changing marketplace, locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally is the focus of this course. Learners consider how the dynamics of these relationships provide inherent risks and opportunities and, most likely, an unprecedented business paradigm for the future. The underlying current throughout this course is the question of how economic and political globalization affects culture - and, vice versa. Because there is a tendency to view globalization only within the process of economic advancement, this course intends to move beyond that singular conception and encourage learners to identify the cultural, political, and social dimensions as well. MGT 6712 International Law
This course provides the learner with an expanded knowledge of fundamental legal aspects associated with the study of international business. Through case studies, assigned readings and use of various legal principles, learners become familiar with the application of international laws to the global business marketplace in such areas as multinational enterprise, international trade, labor practices, dispute resolution, individual rights, and foreign investment and banking. MGT 6713 International Management
This course introduces students to the meaning and importance of international business, the basic forms of business activities, the current theories, and the processes and competencies needed in order to succeed in the era of increasing globalization. As a result, learners gain an appreciation for the complexities of issues facing international businesses in areas of business management, product/service marketing, human resources, cultural differences, product/service standards and environmental impacts. They also develop the ability to analyze an appreciation for the cultural, economic, political (governmental) and social aspects of a country other than the United States. MGT 6714 International Finance
This course examines financial management in an international setting. As capital markets of the world are becoming more integrated, a solid understanding of international finance has become essential for astute corporate decision-making. Particular attention is given to learning how to make various corporate financial decisions, such as those pertaining to investment, capital structure, dividend policy, and working capital management. Learners are guided toward a more detailed understanding of the foundations of international financial management, world financial markets and foreign exchange exposure management. MGT 6716 Leadership Strategies for Women
Learners identify the necessary skills that enhance personal and professional success for women in the changing business world. Learners assess their leadership style and learn to employ the most successful strategies based upon their unique leadership personality. Through an in depth investigation of historical triggering events, learners explore the integration of careers with personal lives and establish a framework for developing a professional network. Case studies, demographic research, and critical analysis are used to develop a more in depth understanding of the need for continued research in the area of leadership development for women. MGT 6720 Commercialization of Intellectual Property
The business, legal, political, and social aspects surrounding the phenomenon called Intellectual Property is explored in this course and is predicated on two fundamental questions, "What is Intellectual Property, and does my company have it?" The course begins with an overarching perspective, identifies working definitions and traditional organizational processes and procedures, and then shifts to some specifics and certain industries (information technology, music, pharmaceuticals). MCT 6721 Cases In Strategic Management for Women

This course examines both the historical perspective and current research on the strategic advancement of women in the world of work. Specifically addressed are a review of cases and best practices, the reality of multiple roles that can benefit work performance, and the study of organizational change to reflect the increasing role of women in the workplace. The course serves as a tool for guiding a woman's growth and development as a high-achieving leader.
MCT 6722 Leading Through Negotiation
(SMW certificate program)
This course examines the negotiation process related specifically to the strategic bargaining processes and issues facing women. Hidden biases in negotiation and conflict resolution in situations where imbalance of power and equity may influence the outcome are explored. Specific dimensions and steps in approaching negotiation are practiced. The course serves as a foundation for approaching both personal and professional bargaining situations.
MCT 6723 Innovation and Entrepreneurship
(SMW certificate program)
This course examines the theoretical framework and practical aspects of entrepreneurship and innovation. Specific focus is given to the importance of women entrepreneurs in the past as well as present business and community environments. The course also explores the differences between small business entrepreneurs and their counterparts in corporate America. From this course, learners develop a comprehensive appreciation for entrepreneurial business and the importance of innovation to the success of that business.
MCT 6724 Board of Directors Development
(SMW certificate program)
Learners explore various aspects of board of directors' development, including both historical and contemporary perspectives on women and boards. Although the emphasis is on corporate/for profit boards, information on various nonprofit board issues also is discussed. The course provides information about board membership and responsibilities, and requirements for becoming viable candidates for potential selection as a board member.
