9:30 AM-11:00 AM- Bring It Back To Life! Resuscitation Strategies for Dying Drafts and Tired Poems
Instructor: J.C. Todd
In this whirlwind workshop, we will practice new and radical approaches to reviving poems and prose poems that have lost energy. We’ll locate and discuss the leaks and fractures, their causes and solutions, then redraft to bring the poems back to life. Bring two or three poems or drafts on your laptop, pad or phone and one copy in a readable 14-point font. If you’d rather work on paper, bring two printed copies (14-point font) of each poem. Scissors, markers, and other materials provided.
11:30 AM-1:00 PM- How Movies Make Us Better Writers
Instructor: Erin Entrada Kelly
Why is the book always better? As readers and writers, we know the answer. Books allow us to delve deeper into our characters. We experience their interior and exterior lives, spend more time with them, and get to know them on a more intimate level. But movies have a lot to teach us about how to craft our stories. A good movie can teach us about pacing, tone, characterization, and voice -- some of the most difficult elements for writers to master. During this workshop, attendees will watch brief movie clips that illustrate each of these elements, and learn what to look for the next time they sit down with popcorn.
