Derrick's Semester in France

Derrick Cline - August 10, 2016

I don’t remember when my interest in France begun. All I know is that Paris, France has always been a mythical destination that seemed to transcend the mundane banality of everyday life. Until this point, Paris had remained a dream; a fairy tale. Financial complications and basic lack of opportunities had meant that my intense desire to experience the wonders of Paris, had to wait. Taking classes in French and History only strengthened my strange connection with this ancient city. It seemed that it was my calling to see, smell, feel, hear the totality of Paris.

Looking for a college, one of the things that was most important to me was the prospect of studying abroad. Besides having the major, I wanted the school I chose to be able to send me on my way to my dream. I found that opportunity in Rosemont. Since Day 1 in college I knew that my academic journey would have to culminate in the experience of my life: studying abroad in Paris. I knew this, but still it did not feel real.

A little over a year ago, I began my process and after a year of hard work, here I am. I am within forty-eight hours of getting on my first plane (only slightly terrified), and leaving literally everything I’ve ever known for five months. And I couldn’t be more excited! Au Revoir!
