Workshops

10 - 11 a.m. Poetry Writing Workshop

Opening the Door: a Poetry Writing Workshop with Alison Hicks

Prepare to surprise yourself. This one-hour workshop will lead you through a process to help you get out of your own way and take you to what you didn’t know you knew. Bring notebook or paper and pen or pencil, and get ready to focus in, leave behind certainties, and let your poem begin.

11 A.M. - 12 P.M. Publishing with Literary Journals & Small Presses

Publishing is a goal of most writers. But the competition to get into the better literary journals is keen, and the odds of landing a book deal are slimmer still. During this hour, we’ll discuss the joys and pitfalls of small-press publishing—along with strategies for navigating the sometimes quirky and continually evolving literary landscape. Curtis Smith will briefly share his experiences, then open the floor and dedicate the majority of the hour to discussing the audience’s questions. The hour will start with a short reading of Smith's latest story collection, Beasts and Men, just released from Press 53.

12 - 1 p.m. KidLims with Philadelphia Stories, Jr.

KidLims with Philadelphia Stories, Jr. Workshop

There once were some kids from PA,

Whose mom said one morning in May,

“There’s a workshop at noon.

Go write! Have fun! Go soon!”

So they went and they rhymed—hurray!

Discover how much fun limericks can be—and submit your best work for possible publication in Philadelphia Stories Jr!
